It’s very helpful when everyone has a basic knowledge of Bed Bugs.
Bed Bug Dogs K9 are extremely helpful and an important part of our Bed Bug Program at Clark Pest Remedy. If you live in Georgia or the Hilton Head, SC Area give us call at 770-957-1915 and we can try to answer your questions to see if this would be helpful to you.
The Dogs enjoy working every day. They can distinguish between bed bugs and other insects very easily. They know the difference just like we know red and blue. As humans we think in terms of vision because that is our main sense. “You should see what I saw yesterday”. “I saw it that way.” ” See what you can do about it”.If the dogs could talk they would say “you should have smelled what I smelled yesterday”
These dogs are like little biological x-ray machines that are portable and have great personalities. They help us to quickly determine which areas are infested and which are not, making remediation much more accurate and thorough. The dogs are paired with a handler and trained to work daily with their “Best Friend” This handler is responsible for their every whim. Feeding, Grooming, Training constantly, Safety. But most of all there is a bond that develops that makes the dog want to please their handler. Yes they are rewarded for finding them just as we are rewarded for work. It is like a fun game for the dogs and they are proud of their finds. We have many customers that find them fun to watch. We do many High-Rise, Assisted Living, Hotels where the dogs can inspect a room in just a few minutes with accuracy. Its not uncommon for them to complete 40-60 units a day. Heat is a factor as we must keep the dogs cool. We are very mindful of the animals safety and living conditions. The handlers always fall in love with their dogs. This is because they watch the dogs perform so well and realize that they are solely working to please them. It is only natural to immensely love them also. It is not uncommon for a dog to follow their handler everywhere they go.They usually don’t want their handler out of sight. So they tag along everywhere, just being a regular dog when off-duty. After the K9 does their job we are making notes to help us do a great job of elimination.
We use Thermal Remediation Heat Equipment to eliminate bed bugs. Bed Bugs have no resistance to temperatures above 118 degrees. We use electric equipment (No Propane) and create our own power with installed generators in our trailers or trucks. It is typical for a Heat Treatment to take 5-7 hours to complete. There is some preparation that needs to take place by the resident. If you have a bed bug issue or you think you may have a problem and want the K9 service to be sure give us a call at 770-957-1915 and we will get the ball rolling to get you bed bug free and keep it that way.
Bed Bugs can be a major concern in a Senior Living Environment. With all the people living closely together it makes it a challenge to keep Bed Bugs under Control. Just their hitchhiking nature makes them a constant problem. With older folks it’s also quite common for them to move in used furniture or clothing that’s infested. They also have visitors that sometimes have bed bugs at their homes. Then you have all the healthcare workers and employees that work there. Unfortunately with old age the eyesight is sometimes not as good as it was. I have seen Seniors that had them pretty bad but they just weren’t seeing them.

Here are a few protocols we recommend and provide.
Education: We provide basic bed bug training for your employees, tenants and management. It’s much better when everyone knows more about bed bugs and what they look like. Also all the different ways you can bring them in. There are always a lot of good questions.
We do a Power Point type presentation with many pictures and information to share with tenants, maintenance, and management.
K9 Bed Bug Dogs: We have 3 bed bug dogs at this time. We use them on sweeps throughout facilities determining the absence or presence. We can typically do 60-100 units in one day using all 3 dogs. After the inspection is completed you will know which units have an issue and which do not. This is a fabulous way to maintain control in your facility. Some get a bit nervous but once they see the dogs perform and the results, most want us to start doing sweeps quarterly. Contact us for pricing on facilities sweeps.

Thermal Remediation Heat Treatments for Bed Bugs:
Our Electric Heat Systems Trucks and Trailers have built-in generators to provide the power for the heaters. The heaters are [placed inside strategically and it usually takes about an hour to heat the area to above 120 degrees. During this time we set up beds, couches, etc and we also do some containment spraying of host areas and outlet plates. We finish up heating at 130-135 degrees and hold the heat for 3-4 hours or more with fans spreading the heat around evenly.
We treated an entire floor of a Senior facility in Atlanta.
Aprehend: Is a new Biological Material used to help control bed bugs. We use this in some situations. Not a pesticide. It is actually a fungii that is bottled and used to create barriers that bed bugs would have to go through to reach a host.
We can also give a warranty with our work.

What Steps should be taken to properly manage a facility such as this for Bed Bugs ?
Senior Living Tenant Training Class
This is often times overlooked. We offer free educational classes to make sure the staff/and or tenants know the basic information they need to know to identify a problem and keep it from spreading throughout a facility. Some management get a little nervous but they always are glad they made the decision to go ahead with it. I also have some training classes on my youtube channel for small groups or single employees. This can be done with a cup of coffee and a bisquit in just a few minutes.
Bed Bug Detection Dog
Our K9 Team can inspect one room, one home, a whole facility or high rise. This is the most efficient and accurate way to determine areas of activity
Bed Bug Dog Training Wheel
The dogs are constantly calibrated much like a scientific instrument. Their sense of smell is thousands of times more acute than ours. With a well trained human inspector/handler the team together can do some wonderful detection work and save money and spread.
Aaron the Bed Bug Dog finds them in a couch.
Many times there are visual signal of activity. This should be reported and responded to very quickly if possible.
Bed Bugs in Couch

Couch Bed Bugs
Excrement marks, skins, or live bugs can be found in many areas around where people sleep, or gather.
Designing the proper treatment plan is based on detection and is critical to the success of maintaining a Bed Bug Free Environment.
3. Bed Bug Treatments
We use Thermal Remediation Heat Equipment. This is specially engineered Electric Heat Equipment built for this type of treatment.
This is the most effective method for elimination of Bed Bugs. Why ? Because Bed Bugs have no resistance to temperatures above 120 degrees. They have a lot of resistance to the pesticides on the market today. And it fills the entire area up with the temperatures giving them no place to hide.
Bed Setup for Heat Treatment
We also use some pesticides around the edges of the room for containment. Dusting the wall plates is also important.
4. Encasements for mattresses and box springs.
Mattress and Box Springs Encasements
Encasements disallow future access to the mattress and box spring. It also serves as a secondary line of defense against any survivor bugs or eggs. With some materials being used it also helps protect you from exposure to any insecticides that may have been used. Not only by us but also by the tenant or homeowner. It is very common for self treating to occur before we are called in.
We install these at the end of the treatment process.
5. Follow up Inspection and Monitoring.
After treatment has completed a monitoring program with K9 Inspections or Visual Monitoring should be set up in order to be proactive in this area.
Call Us at 770-957-1915 to discuss starting a Bed Bug Program for your facility. We have a program from start to finish. Bed Bugs are a manageable insect to control but you must be proactive or you can find yourself with a really large problem. We have had Senior High Rises call in with 40-50 infested units. This is not an enjoyable situation for anyone involved.
We can help you with ideas to help manage your situation efficiently.
